Curriculum Standards

*

In order to attain a world-class education system, DoDEA follows curriculum standards that are based on the content standards produced by the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, the National Council of Teachers of English, the International Reading Association, the National Research Council’s National Science Education Standards, and the National Council for Teachers of Social Studies.

*

All teachers and specialists follow the DoDEA/DoDDS Content Standards specific to that grade level.

*

The teachers at Dexheim Elementary review the standards with their students using "kid language". This aids students in knowing what they are expected to learn and be able to use during each lesson.

*

Early Childhood Education (grades K-3) teachers engage in developmentally appropriate practices.

*

"A Parent's Guide" informs parents about the four major curriculum areas: Language Arts/Reading, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies. Samples of what students are learning, what they should know, and what they should be able to do, are included for each grade level. This guide also lists ways in which parents can help their children.

*

Course descriptions are available for Grades 7-12, as are the High School Graduation Requirements.

English as a Second Language

*

English as a Second Language (ESL) instruction assists students whose dominant language is not English.

*

The program is designed to meet the unique needs of these students so that they achieve academic success.

*

Depending on individual needs, instruction may occur in the general education classroom and/or in a small group setting for a portion of the school day.

Gifted Education

*

The Gifted Education program identifies students with high potential and exceptional performance and offers challenges that match their strengths.

*

Various instruments are used to determine eligibility for this program.

Counseling

*

The Guidance program at Dexheim ES consists of preventative classroom guidance lessons as well as small group and individual counseling sessions to work on specific needs of the student.

*

Students, parents, and teachers can make referrals. Parent permission is sought when a student would be counseled on an ongoing basis.

*

The Second Step Program, a classroom program that teaches skills in empathy, impulse control, and anger management, is one of the programs used and encouraged throughout all grade levels.

*

Creative Conflict Solving for Kids is a Peaceworks program used to encourage students to “Fight Fair” to solve problems.  Character Education is also a focus at Dexheim.

READ 180

*

The READ 180 program at Dexheim Elementary provides additional assistance in daily 90-minute blocks to 3rd through 6th graders who have been experiencing difficulty in reading.  If a student meets the criteria to receive READ 180 instruction, their parent must sign a permission slip for them to participate.

*

The goal of this supplemental reading assistance is to provide students with research-based interventions and strategies that specifically address their needs so that they can reach their independent reading goals.

*

The individual needs of the students are addressed through adaptive software, high interest literature, and direct instruction in reading skills.
