Our Nurse
Healthy children learn better!
A professional school health nurse provides care, counsels,
educates, manages and supervises the school health program. The main
goal of a school nurse is to remove health related barriers to
learning. This leads to improved success at school and promotes optimal
levels of well being.
Services
· Emergency care to all ill or injured students.
· Health counseling for children, parents and school personnel.
· Health education.
· Maintains confidential student health and immunization records.
· Provides medically prescribed interventions, which includes
medication administration.
State of Health
· Notify the school nurse of any contagious diseases that might affect
our students.
· Keep your child home when he/she has a fever or is feeling ill in the
morning.
· Provide us with necessary physician statement that restricts certain
activities.
· Make sure that your child has eaten a well-balanced breakfast, has a
nutritious snack and lunch.
Immunizations Requirements
· DoDEA required immunizations (see DoDDS Health Service Guide).
· Proof of immunizations must be presented during registration.
· Contact the school nurse if you have questions regarding your child’s
immunization status.
Screenings
· Routine screenings for vision, hearing, height, and weight in an
effort to identify health problems that might interfere with learning.
· Referrals to health agencies will be given to parents if a screening
warrants further evaluations.
Illness and Injury at School
· The school nurse will contact the parents if the child is to be sent
home. Please update phone numbers as soon as changes occur. The
following notification procedure will be followed in this order as
needed, 1. parent 2. emergency contact 3. sponsor’s supervisor
· If a condition is serious, medical transport will be called first,
then a call will be made to the parent. At any medical facility a
parent must be present to authorize treatment unless it is a life
threatening situation.
Medication Policy
· The nurse does not administer medication. This includes aspirin,
Tylenol, cough drops, or any other over the counter medication.
· If a physician prescribes medication during the school day, the
parent must bring the medication in the original prescription bottle
with a “Doctor’s Permission for Medication” form (available at medical
clinics).
· All medications must be kept in nurse’s office, such as inhalers.
Resources
· The nurse is a resource person and consultant to students, parents
and faculty.
